Q: Does dance raise your heart rate level more than other sports?

A:  It depends on the style of dance. Any form of dance that requires a lot of movement is a good way of speeding up your heartbeat. For example, jazz, swing, tango, salsa, and hip-hop can increase your heart rate quickly.

The type of music you do sports in can also affect your heart rate. If you listen to fast or upbeat music, you are more likely to move more and as a result, accomplish an increased heart rate.

In conclusion, the heart rate level acquired during sports all depends on the form of the sport you are playing

Barry Connick

Instructor, Dance Host

I first became interested in dancing as a teenager, learning the ballroom styles wherever and whenever I could; often dancing with my sister who was teaching lessons at a local studio. As I became a young adult, I was able to start lessons through the local school programs. By the time I turned 21 I began teaching American Smooth Ballroom basics with Arthur Murray Studios in San Francisco. After appearing in a stage production, a professional choreographer asked me to train to dance professionally; I chose marriage instead and decided the stage was not in my future.

I have been teaching for the LOP Sliders Social Dance Club since June, 2008, teaching the combined styles of ballroom and country along with Latin Rhythm, with emphasis on "social dancing" as opposed to competition ballroom style.

My goal is to encourage the student to become comfortable with dancing at clubs, lounges, weddings, etc. In other words, "social dancing".
